Rim Lighting

Photography TipsHave you ever tried to use rim lighting? It's a great thing to know if you haven't learned yet, and here's a short refresher if you already know. When there's a light on the far side of someone, the light leaks through right around their head illuminating their hair or hat. Sometimes the line can be so crisp that it looks as though they're being cut out. Rim light is beautiful, and it adds a ton of visual interest to a photo. The real win here is taking an extra second to try and look around your environment for some kind of rim lighting. Don't settle for the light you're given, find better light. And also plan to show up during golden hour, instead of trying to do photoshop later and add in something fake. I am a photographer and educator living in the mountains near Los Angeles. I’m all about nature (camping, climbing, hiking and running around), and I have an unmanly love for cats. I am a firm believer in fostering a close knit photo community and encouraging individual progression.

We are all in this together.

Peter Hurley
How he describes himself:I took up the camera and while shooting a regatta I turned the camera on a fellow model/actor and friend of mine who had come along for the day. Those pictures ended up in his portfolio and created the outset of my new career. Since then my pictures have led me into advertising and my clients now include Levi’s, Reebok, DKNY, Johnnie Walker and Axe Deodorant to name a few. I am continually growing as a photographer and I’m so glad that my crazy path has landed me here with a camera in hand.
Bella Kotak
How she describes herself:Bella Kotak is a fine art and fashion photographer currently based in Oxford & London, England. An art lover from a young age she always knew that she would work within the creative industry. Photography changed her life when she picked up a camera and began a 365 project on Flickr. From that moment she was hooked by this medium that translates thoughts and imagination into tangible form. Inspired by fairytales, nature and strong feminine characters Bella’s pictures lift the veil of the overlooked and reminds us that there’s magic in the most ordinary of spaces.

How he describes himself:Photographer•Travel•Adventurer.
When it comes to weddings, I love the quirk, the loving, the joyful, the tears, the awkward laughs and the oh-so-beautiful embraces. Weddings are about bringing families together and marrying your best friend, and I want to capture every part of that in a way that makes you smile when you use your photographs to trigger your memory 2, 5, or 50 years down the road.

My hope is that you will feel incredibly loved and thankful for your relationships every time you look at your photographs.

Jose Villa
How he describes himself:I am a fine art wedding photographer. My approach applies fine art photography to the living, breathing, fast-moving phenomenon that is a wedding. Yes, I do some documentary photography, you need to capture the important moments at a wedding, but I also compose and direct. For me, it is all about making something beautiful, even if I have to insert myself into the situation. Ultimately, my goal is to craft vibrant, energetic, fine art images that are as unique as the people in the photographs.
